Opening Prayer

Lord, thank you for giving me strength to endure hardships. You are sufficient, and you have equipped me with all that I need to be a warrior for your Kingdom. Bless my thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and draw my heart closer to Yours.

Redefining Strength

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 9:10

In a world that idolizes hustle and rewards outward success, it’s easy to measure strength by how much you accomplish, how resilient you appear, or how productive you are.

When I graduated college in 2022, I was determined to ‘be somebody.’ I was chasing after worldly success— followers, money, status, etc. and what I found along the way was more stress, anxiety, and feelings of depression than I’d ever had.

That is because there is an illusion of self-sufficiency.

I distinctly remember the moment I realized that the vanity of the world I was chasing was drawing me further away from God. I was returning from a weekend partying with my friends at the Jersey Shore. Sitting in my car in silence, I needed something to distract myself from going into another week stressed and unfulfilled.

At the time, I had just started running and was really into any content Nick Bare put out. I typed his name into Spotify and found an interview he did with Christian Huff on the 4:8 Men podcast.

I expected to hear a conversation about fitness, entrepreneurship, or nutrition, but what I stumbled upon was much more important than that and exactly what I needed to hear.

Truthfully, I had no idea Nick was a Christian. But hearing him share about his internal struggles and battles gave me a sense of peace, knowing I wasn’t alone. Even somebody like him, who on the outside seems like he has it all figured out— a thriving business, a beautiful family, great health, etc.- recognized that none of that matters if he doesn’t have faith in Jesus.

Being in the world of entrepreneurship and fitness, I’ve seen a big emphasis on being self-reliant and going inward to find strength. When I try to figure it out on my own or think I can do it myself I fall short.

Society has created an illusion of self-sufficiency where strength means pushing harder, working longer, or achieving more worldly success. But this self-reliance can become a trap, leading to a sense of emptiness even after outward achievements. The truth is, we were never designed to carry the burden of success alone.

Paul's words remind us that God’s grace isn’t just a safety net for when we fall short; it’s the foundation we stand on. Strength does not come from pretending you have it all figured out— it comes from acknowledging your weaknesses, surrendering to God, and asking Him to give you the strength you need.

Here’s how you can lean into God's grace in your personal and professional life:

  1. Admit when you’re struggling

It can be tempting to hold onto the struggles you’re facing or try to fight those battles along. Be vulnerable and share with trusted mentors, friends, and community, and bring it to the Lord.

  2. Stop measuring your worth by productivity

Your identity isn’t tied to how much money you make, what your sales numbers are, or even the job title you hold. God’s grace means you are already enough. Work hard at whatever you do to glory God, but also slow down, take breaks, rest intentionally, and trust that God is still working through you.

  3. Trust God’s plan and timing

Our lives are more public than ever before and it can be easy to fall into the comparison trap of what others are doing or accomplishing and think you’re falling behind. The only person we should be comparing ourselves to is the person we were yesterday. God has a plan, but He works on his timing, not ours.

Redefining strength isn’t about doing less— it’s about doing things differently. It’s recognizing that God supplies us with the grace to endure whatever hardships we are facing when we ask Him for it. True strength is found when we shift our mindsets from one of striving to one of surrender.

So the next time you feel overwhelmed or insufficient, remember: “His grace is sufficient for you.”

Lord, thank you for your grace. There is nothing that I need to do to earn your love. I am a sinner, yet You loved me enough to send your Son to live a perfect life so that I don’t have to. Help me to surrender to Your will daily and trust in Your timing and will for my life. Amen.
