Welcome to One Day Out, a weekly newsletter to help deepen your faith, enhance your health, and guide you in pursuing a purpose-filled life.
Opening Prayer
Father, thank You for being the one who renews, restores, and realigns. Thank You for showing us that health is more than just what we eat—it’s who we rely on. I pray that we turn to You before anything else. When we feel lost, when we’re seeking clarity, and when we don’t have the answers, help us to pray and fast—not for the physical benefits, but for spiritual breakthrough and intimacy with You.
I Started a Bone Broth Fast for My Liver—But God Had Bigger Plans
I recently got bloodwork done and saw something that shook me up.
My liver enzymes were more than double the healthy range.
This has been a trend for the past two years. And the crazy part?
I don’t drink much. I live clean. I eat well. I train hard.
But something wasn’t right.
So I reached out to my friend Ali Miller, a functional medicine dietitian who knows her stuff when it comes to holistic healing. You can check her out here and listen to our convo here.
Ali recommended a 10-day real food detox: no gluten, no grains, no dairy.
To wrap it up, she suggested a 2-3 day bone broth fast to support my liver, gallbladder, and gut.

Typical breakfast during the detox

Spinach, grilled chicken, berries, balsamic vinegar

looks boring, but actually slapped
Here’s what the fast looked like:
~48 oz of bone broth/day split into 3 cups
2 of the 3 cups had a spoonful of ghee
Morning routine: 16 oz water + Redmond's salt + ½ lemon + 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
Oil pulling with coconut oil to support oral & gut detox
Benefits of Bone Broth Fasting:
Gives your digestive system a break so your liver and gut can heal
Collagen supports gut lining + joint health
High in glycine, which helps with detoxification and better sleep
Nourishes without spiking blood sugar or insulin
Anti-inflammatory + immune-supportive
The Results:
By day three, I felt like my mind and body were on a different frequency.
I was a little low-energy—especially playing flag football Tuesday night with nothing but bone broth and ghee in my system—but I felt light, focused, and spiritually reconnected.
And that’s what surprised me most.
I didn’t set out to do this fast for spiritual reasons.
But the less I ate, the more I prayed.
The more time I had without training or prepping food, the more time I spent with God.
Biblical Fasting vs. Health-Focused Fasting
There’s a difference. And we need to talk about it.
A biblical fast is not a diet. It’s not about fat loss. It’s not a cleanse.
It’s about emptying ourselves to be filled with the Spirit.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:16-18:
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do... But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father... and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
A biblical fast is between you and God.
It’s a spiritual weapon—something we use when we need direction, breakthrough, or deeper intimacy with the Father.
When you’re stuck…
When you’re anxious…
When you’re facing a big decision…
Pray and fast.
It’s not just spiritual discipline—it’s spiritual alignment.
Where the Two Overlap
Although my fast started for physical reasons, I realized how much my body, mind, and soul needed the reset.
For the past few months, I’d been shoveling carbs, doing intense endurance training, and eating late at night.
I’d developed some bad habits—binge eating after dinner, using food for comfort, and living like a glutton without even realizing it.
The bone broth fast helped me reconnect with my why.
It reminded me that food is fuel, but it’s not my master.
I’ve built my life around intentionality in health, fitness, and faith.
And this fast brought me back to that foundation.
God Used It to Get Through to Me
Even though this wasn’t a traditional biblical fast, I found myself praying more.
With no food to prep, no gym to hit, and no distractions, I just sat with Him.
And He met me there.
Here’s What I’m Walking Away With:
A clearer mind
A healed gut
A fresh start with food
A renewed desire to fast and pray more consistently
A deeper reminder: real health is spiritual
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for reminding me that health starts in the heart. Thank You for showing me that even when I seek physical healing, You can use it to draw me closer to You. I pray for anyone reading this to feel convicted not just to eat better but to live better. Help us not be ruled by our appetites but by Your Spirit.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
