Why “I’m Trying” Is Keeping You Stuck, Paying Off Debt, Eating and Training to Lose Fat, and Honoring Feedback in Relationships

The quiet lie of “I’m trying” and how it’s sabotaging your discipline, health, and intimacy with God

Welcome to One Day Out, a weekly newsletter to help deepen your faith, enhance your health, and guide you in pursuing a purpose-filled life.

🙏 Opening Prayer:

Father, thank You for the breath in my lungs and the new day ahead. Help me stop waiting for perfect conditions and start walking in faith. Give me the discipline to act, the wisdom to choose well, and the courage to trust You with the outcome. Amen.

👋 Note from me

I’ve been hearing a lot of “I’m trying…” lately. Trying to get back in shape. Trying to be more consistent. Trying to grow in faith. But here’s the thing—trying is often just a safe way to stay stuck. This week is a challenge to stop trying and start doing—because God honors commitment, not comfort.

🙌 FAITH

I hate the word “trying.”

Trying to read your Bible. Trying to pray. Trying to follow Jesus. In a culture of comfort, trying often becomes a socially acceptable way of staying lukewarm. But Jesus doesn’t call us to try. He calls us to follow.

James 1:22 says, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

This week, I’ve been encouraging others (and myself) to move from passive intention to active pursuit. Don’t just try to read your Bible—set a time, a place, and a plan. Wake up at 7 AM. Sit at your kitchen table. Read one chapter of John per day.

God doesn’t need perfection. He honors discipline rooted in a desire to grow closer to Him.

🏃‍♂️ FITNESS

I’ve been helping clients reduce visceral fat—the dangerous fat stored deep in the abdomen—by using a smarter approach: interval training.

No, not hour-long HIIT classes every day. Just 15–25 minutes, 2–3x per week on the bike, rower, or treadmill—where you hit 75–80% of your max heart rate during work intervals. If you don’t know it, you can calculate it here.

This method has been shown to target visceral fat more effectively than steady-state cardio. I’ve incorporated it into my own training and seen a huge difference in both composition and energy levels.

Less time, more impact. That’s what we’re after.

🍽️ NUTRITION

Last week I shared how I’ve been reducing saturated fat to support my liver and cholesterol.

A study Jeremy Ethier shared in one of his YouTube videos stuck with me: two groups ate the same surplus of calories via muffins—one made with saturated fat (butter), the other with monounsaturated fat (like olive oil). The butter group gained significantly more visceral fat.

You don’t have to cut out saturated fat completely, but replacing some with healthier sources like olive oil, avocado, or fatty fish can support your long-term health and body composition.

Visceral fat loss still comes down to a calorie deficit, but the type of fat matters too.

💬 RELATIONSHIPS

My fiancée is the kind of person who tells me what I need to hear, not what I want to hear.

This week, I showed her a few posts I had drafted, and she asked me straight up: “Is that really your best work?” I got defensive. But she was right.

I had been prioritizing speed and volume over intentionality and quality. After reflecting and praying, I reworked my approach, and the very next project landed me an extended brand deal.

Let this be a reminder: we all need people who love us enough to call us to be what God has created us capable of.

🧠 PERSONAL GROWTH

I am officially debt-free.

After seven years of slowly paying off my student loans, I made the final payment. Even though some people told me to just keep investing and pay the minimum, I kept feeling the nudge—especially as I prepare to enter marriage—to be free from that weight.

Romans 13:8 says, “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.”

This week, I’m celebrating God’s provision and the peace that comes with following Him. If you’re facing a tough decision—financial, relational, or anything—ask yourself: What would wise stewardship look like in this situation?

🙏 Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me into action, not comfort. Thank You for Your provision, for the people who sharpen me, and for the strength to move forward with clarity and conviction. May this week be one where I honor You with every decision, big and small. Amen.
